Charles Rudy (1904-1986) was a prize-winning sculptor and teacher from
York, Pennsylvania. He was hired by
Walker
Hancock in 1965 to be his direct assistant. Hancock was too busy to
make regular visits to Stone Mountain to supervise the carving. Rudy had
time available and visited the carving site on a regular basis, nearly
once per week, reporting his findings to Hancock. He worked on the
project for about four years.
