Joseph Canales was another sculptor to work on the carving. He was hired as master carver by George Weiblen in 1964. He was an accomplished and talented sculptor, but he was not able to visualize such a huge sculpture while working up close, and he made some minor errors in execution of the carving of the head of Stonewall Jackson. He was dismissed by Weiblen in 1965.
