Roy Faulkner was a quarry worker hired by Walker Hancock to work on the carving starting in 1963. He was found to have great artistic aptitude.

Roy Faulkner made significant contributions to the carving through the time of its completion, including becoming an expert with the highly efficient thermo-jet torch. Above he is working on General Lee's nose with a small one. Faulkner had an excellent working relationship with Hancock.
