Augustus Lukeman

Henry Augustus Lukeman was selected to take over the carving project after Gutzon Borglum left in 1925. He was not comfortable with heights and preferred to do his work from ground level, tasking others with the work on the mountain's face, but did venture up to the carving when needed. Funding ran out in 1928 and work on the carving was suspended.
