Helen Plane

Caroline Helen Jemison Plane (1829-1925) was a charter member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the president of the Atlanta Chapter. Her husband, Captain William F. Plane, was killed at the Battle of Sharpsburg, Maryland (Antietam) on September 17, 1862, while leading a company of the Sixth Georgia Infantry. Inspired by the idea of William H Terrell and John Temple Graves, she began promoting the idea of a confederate memorial carving in 1914. It was her idea to contract Gutzon Borglum to create the memorial.
