Cohen "Dick" Ludwig (1911-1972) of Faith, North Carolina learned sculpting while working in the quarry industry.

He was hired by George Weiblen as Master Carver in 1965 to replace Joseph Canales. He began by completing the head of Jefferson Davis which was started by Teodoro Bottinelli, and working on Davis's body and his horse. He then began improving the head of Stonewall Jackson.

While Cohen's results were good, he was uncomfortable working at such heights. The death of Howard Williams was the final impetus, and Ludwig resigned after just over a year of work.

Twice Ludwig returned to work on the carving and then quit again, in 1967 and 1968.
